Subject:
Development and Implementation of New Image
Processing Methods for Robust Laser Profiler Operation
Introduction:
The digitization and reconstruction
of 3D shapes has numerous applications in areas that include
manufacturing, virtual simulation, science, medicine, and consumer
marketing. In DLR we have developed a Laser Scanner that acquires
accurate range data through optical triangulation.
Tasks:
Besides proper
calibration and operation of a laser profiler (already
done in this project), there still remain some inherent
errors in the profiler operation. The standard methods for
extracting range data from optical triangulation scanners
are accurate only for planar objects of uniform
reflectance. Using these methods, curved surfaces,
discontinuous surfaces, and surfaces of varying
reflectance cause systematic distortions of the range
data. This work is intended to study already developed
algorithms for coping with these problems (e.g. spacetime
analysis) and implement either already developed or
new algorithms in the DLR Laser Profiler Device.
